The Tour de Houston began as an idea that came to the Mayor from State Senator Rodney Ellis who participated in a five boroughs ride in New York City. He enjoyed being able to see the historic areas of New York by bicycle and thought that Houston’s historic districts could offer bicycle enthusiasts a great experience as well. Mayor Bill White loved the idea because it provides a wonderful civic bonding experience for Houstonians and also promotes clean air and a healthy lifestyle.
