2008 Guidelines for Driving SAG in the Team Truck
The following guidelines were developed to assist volunteers who provide SAG support to the team during our training rides using the Valeoro Truck.
- SAG Drivers must sign a waiver of liability before driving the MS 150 truck. Click here to access the wavier. Your name must be added as an authorized driver prior to the training ride. Please coordinate this with the Velo Valero SAG POC (point of contact). NOTE: The 2008 SAG POC is Peter Ray(peter.ray@valero.com).
- Keys for the truck are available at the Valero HQ Security Desk. The POC will coordinate this.
- Please observe the follow guidelines when using the truck:
- Seat belts must be worn by all passengers at all times!
- No amount of alcohol can be consumed before driving the truck, or while driving the truck.
- Do not put anything in the bed of the truck! A bike rack is available for the truck, and should be mounted prior to the training ride.
- Because of the exterior signage, leave the rear silding glass panel up, unless necessary to lower when backing up.
- Because of the exterior signage, leave the back seat windows up.
- Do not park the vehicle in any place that could be considered inappropriate.
- The turn radius on this vehicle is different than some vehicles. Please be careful when turning.
- If transporting cyclists/equipment, please cover/protect the seats from dirt, sweat, etc.
- Make sure you're getting plenty of rest the night before driving so you stay sharp. Drowsiness can lead to becoming distracted and inattentive.
- Make sure your cell phone is fully charged prior to the ride - the ability to be in constant communication with riders while on the road is essential!
- Obtain a copy of the training ride route and study it the night before the ride. Focus on areas such as busy intersections or limited shoulder space that may present safety issues. Understand the different route options riders will be using. Finally, review the locations of the the planned rest stops during the training rides.
- Eat a good breakfast to insure a high energy level during the ride.
- A case of bottled water may be provided as part of the ride; you will be contacted by the Velo SAG POC prior to the training ride with instructions on where to obtain this.
- Arrive at the start of the training ride at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the ride.
- For the Saturday rides, check in with the Training Coordinator (John Tenison) and the Safety Officer (Chuck Divelbiss) prior to the ride. The Training Coordinator will introduce you to the riders before the start of the training ride, and provide your them with your cell phone number.
- Make sure you have the cell phone numbers of the Training Coordinator and Safety Officer, and they have your cell phone number.
- Review the list of riders prior to the ride so that you are aware of the number of riders participating, and which routes they will be taking.
- Driving duties when the ride begins:
- Make sure all riders have taken the proper route.
- When driving the truck, turn on the lights and hazard flashers when near/riding behind Velo Valero cyclists to alert traffic of their presence.
- Drive up and wait at strategic turns, bad intersections, top of steep hills, etc. to assist riders as necessary.
- As the ride progresses, please keep a proper safe distance when checking on groups of riders...this is generally 30 yards or so. Additionally, it is sometimes helpful to drive up ahead and wait at a safe visible spot (where cyclists can easily stop or pass) in case riders need to stop for water, maintenance or SAG support.
- Make sure you are available at designated rest stops.
- Watch the riders closely, particularly as the day heats up and the miles add up. Don't be afraid to suggest to a rider that he or she needs to SAG. Make sure to pay particular attention to the last group of riders.
- When passing convenience stores or gas stations on the route, make sure that no Velo Valero cyclists have stopped and need assistance.
- At the end of the ride, review the rider list with the Training Coordinator and the Safety Officer to insure all riders have returned.
- Return the truck to Valero HQ. Remove all trash from the vehicle. Record ending mileage.
- Pat yourself on the back for doing an outstanding job!
