  • Calling All San Antonio Winter Riders!

Update from John Tenison, Training Coordinator -

    Calling All Winter Riders!

(What winter? It's going to hit 80 degrees on Saturday...)  We will be riding from Boerne this Saturday, ride start 8:00 AM from the Fiserv Building in downtown Boerne. Our route takes us to Sisterdale, then across to Waring and Welfare. Attached are maps of the ride start and the routes. Distances are approximately 25, 35 and 40 miles. Bring plenty of fluids - it will get hot (can you believe it?). This is our last winter ride before our official training ride kickoff on March 3. If you haven't done so already, go to the web site and update your rider profile to continue receiving Velo Valero news and ride information. Even if you signed up last year, you'll need to do it again - it's an annual Velo Valero thing. We will have our ride schedule posted on the website through the end of May.  Come on out and join us - you won't need cold weather gear this weekend!

Also - How about joining us for the San Antonio to Austin Tour de Cure on May 19-20? This year we have decided to take the plunge and ride as a National Team, which among other things commits us to ride in multiple events and raise at least $100,000 across all our teams. We've set our sights high, but I know we can make it. A number of our San Antonio riders are flying out to California to join fellow team members from the Bay Area and ride in the Napa Valley Tour de Cure on May 6th. Check our website for news of other Tour de Cure events that we will be riding in.  So, please register for the Tour de Cure of your choice and help us meet our goal (make sure you indicate Velo Valero for team affiliation).

    See ya' on  the road!

  • Jalapeno 100 in Harlingen, TX

Here's an update from Isabel Lovil, who rode the event this weekend.

Good morning.  Just a short report on the the Jalapeno 100 in Harlingen, Texas.  The ride started at 7:30a on Saturday 2/17 with about 300-400 riders in attendance.  The temperature was in the mid-40's when we were loading up our bikes but it sure warmed up by the time the ride started.

I took the 50-mile route and Rod took the 62-mile route.  We met another Velo Valero member who was there from the Corpus refinery but I cannot remember his name!!!!  The course was flat, flat flat but we did run into an occasional headwind to keep things interesting.  The rest stops were unbelievable.  They were manned mostly by folks from the many RV parks out there - the winter Texans.  They had done alot of baking because there were all sorts of homemade brownies, cookies and cupcakes to choose from.

After the ride they served us burgers and some cold brews.  It was a great, well-supported ride and one that we will look forward to doing again.

PS - we had a lot of compliments on our jerseys and there was some interest in the Velo Valero team from the other riders.  I told them to check our website and we would be more than happy to have them on board.

  • We have a winner!

The voters have spoken: By an overwhelming two-to-one margin, the logo with the cyclist in the center of the V was selected.  Zora Bilicich came up with a suggestion at the last moment of putting the cyclist at an angle to make the yellow squiggle look like a trail - yet another absolutely brilliant suggestion by ZB!  Thanks to Zora and Toni Mendoza from Design Services for their work on this project.

    Here's the winner -

This new logo is proudly displayed in our 2007 Team Poster.   Click on the image below to download a high resolution version of this poster.   It can be printed to promote the team during your fundraiser, or used as computer wallpaper.

  • Velo Valero News - We're Bad, We're Nationwide!

There's some exciting news on the Velo front -

Last week the Velo Board voted to step up to the challenge of becoming a National Team for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Tour de Cure fundraising program.  This requires us to -

    • Participate as a team in multiple Tour de Cure events
    • Obtain executive sponsorship
    • Raise at least $100,000 across all the events we participate in

To date, we have 7 teams signed up in 5 different events, so we have this covered.  (Click here to see a list of events and the Captains who are organizing teams for these events).   In terms of sponsorship, CEO Bill Klesse has agreed to make a statement supporting our efforts as a National Team - you can't get much more executive than that!  (There's a rumor I'm officially starting that he may actually ride in a Tour event this spring...)  Finally, we feel we can raise the money.  Last year we had 4 teams participate and raised $77,000, so we are in the ball park.  I know we can do this.

What does this mean to you as a member of Velo Valero?  It means we are now in the big leagues as a team.   Our company logo will be displayed along with the logos of AT&T, Johnson & Johnson, and Gold's Gym (the other National teams) on event t-shirts, signage, publications, and so on.  There will be a special awards ceremony for us at the end of the season recognizing our efforts in this cause.   It also means we are spreading the good things about our team - the friendship, the fitness, the focus on safety, and the community service - throughout the country.  These things represent the best of Valero corporate culture.

I'll be sending more details out on this in the next few months.

    In other news -

We have decided to update our team logo for 2007.  Our old logo was not bad - it just didn't have our team name anywhere on it, or a picture of a bicycle (oops!).  We asked one of the talented artists from the Corporate Graphics Department to design a series of new logos for us.  We're going to allow the team to vote on the new design in a little contest I call "American Logo".  Click here to see the new logos and vote on your favorite.  We'll be accepting votes until 5:00 pm CST on Wednesday, 02/14 (aka, Valentine's Day).

The Team Store is open until 5:00 pm CST on Thursday, 03/08, for Spring Apparel orders.  As noted last time, we are not changing jersey designs in 2007, so if you have a jersey from last year, you don't have to order a new one (unless you want a   spare).  If you are new to Velo Valero, we ask all team members to wear an up to date team jersey in any of the organized team events you participate in.   Click here to access the Store.  Please contact Stan.Lear@valero.com or Gwendolyn.King@valero.com if you have any questions regarding the order process.

We are tentatively planning on having a new rider kick off at Corporate Headquarters in San Antonio during lunch on Tuesday, 02/27.  Click here for details.

Finally, we are still planning on beginning our formal training program for our spring rides in early March.  John Tenison and Chuck Divelbiss continue to lead a series of informal training rides during the winter.  Send an e-mail to john.tenison@valero.com  if you want to participate.

    See ya' on the road!

  • Photos from this week's training ride (NOT!)

For years people have been sending me unusual cycling photos and I've been posting them to this web site.  Donna Escobar cranked it up a notch today by sending me the photos shown below.   These are apparently of a mountain biking course somewhere in Ireland.  Either some PhotoShop jockey has a twisted sense of humor and way too much time on his hands, or these are real photos and I think I'm going to hurl.  Dont' show them to Tenison, or he'll schedule a training ride there!

    Enjoy!
