Dear Velo Valero -
I wanted to be sure you all knew about the TEAM SOCIAL and SPAGHETTI Dinner being held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, the site of the Rider Expo, Friday October 6th. We encourage you to come and eat any time between 6:30-7:30. We will have a formal program from 7:30 - 8:30 pm where we will have a few speakers and some great video footage from the team over the past 6 years. You won't want to miss Peter Ray's creative work. It's sure to be top notch entertainment!!! We are hoping that Eric Olsen can be coerced to once again provide his "stump speech" on the benefits of "butt butter."
We have a ballroom on the 3rd floor of the hotel reserved exclusively for VELO VALERO. We invite you and your family members to join us. There will be a $10 charge for the Spaghetti buffet, which will be located on the 1st floor of the hotel. Just bring your plate up to the 3rd floor where you can meet, great and socialize with all team members from Houston, Louisiana, Dumas, Oklahoma, Corpus Christi, Three Rivers, and many other locations.
We will also have Velo Valero packets there for pick up if you have missed out on getting yours. The packets contain your team T-shirt, socks, Wrist band for meals under the team tent, whistles, tatoos, etc. Be sure to pick yours up that night !!
Guess that's it for now. Don't worry....I'll be e-mailing again soon!

Reprinted from the Valero View on 09/28
When Valero employees started their own bike team, Velo Valero, no one had any idea that the group would eventually become a fundraising powerhouse. The team started out as a handful of bicycle enthusiasts who answered a call from the Multiple Sclerosis Society for riders to participate in the MS 150 Bike to the Beach Bike Tour.
That was in 2000. These days, Velo Valero has spread to several company locations, including its newest plants, purchased just a year ago. Team members have upgraded from T-shirts to slickly designed form-fitting bike jerseys. Official team membership including all locations is nearly 400 now, including employees, friends and relatives – although not all of them ride in the MS 150. And most importantly, Valero is such a force in the MS 150 – perennially having the biggest contingent of riders and raising the most money – that the company has taken on the title sponsorship of the event.

Valero CEO Bill Klesse stands with members of the Velo Valero bike team at a rally for the upcoming MS150 benefit cycling event. Klesse soon will ride alongside 300 other Valero cyclists from San Antonio to Corpus Christi to raise money for multiple sclerosis.
The Valero MS 150 takes place Oct. 7-8, and Velo Valero again will boast the biggest group out of the 4,000 or so cyclists who will take part. In fact, this year they’re shooting for 300 members and hope to raise $125,000 themselves for MS research.
“Cycling in general has become very popular in recent years,” said Rachel Salas, an Accounting Analyst at the Bill Greehey Refinery who volunteers annually during the MS 150. “It’s a hobby that has really grown. A lot of people have wanted to join a cycling team that goes out every weekend and trains.”
Before organizing the Velo Valero team in 2000, Valero employees had participated in the annual two-day ride from San Antonio to Corpus Christi, raising money for multiple sclerosis research. But they’d always done so as individuals, never as a team.
Monica Chapa, a Scheduler in the Supply & Trading Department, was a council member and she took on the task of building a team. “That first year we only had about 35 riders, including some from Corpus Christi, Texas City and Houston,” she said. “I never thought it would be as big as it is, but it’s really great to see.”
At Valero’s Corporate Headquarters in San Antonio, the Velo Valero membership currently numbers around 220. But the drive to get involved has spread quickly to Valero’s other locations, including some that weren’t part of the Valero family in 2000!
The Benicia Refinery has the next-largest contingent, with about 80 members, followed by Wilmington at 22. The combined Corpus Christi and Three Rivers team stands at 18, Texas City at 15 and Paulsboro at 10. The Ardmore Refinery has nine, Port Arthur – only a Valero refinery since last September – already has eight, McKee has seven and Krotz Springs has two.
Because many of the locations are distant, only a few of the riders from outside Texas can participate in the MS 150. But they’ve already found fundraising rides of their own. The Paulsboro, Wilmington and Benicia Velo Valero teams joined the San Antonio team in participating in American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure rides this spring, together raising more than $65,000 for diabetes research.
Benicia celebrated its fifth straight year of participating. “Our ride is in beautiful Napa Valley, and May is the time of year to ride there,” said Benicia Velo Valero member Dan Rubio Jr., an Operations Superintendent. When it was announced at the event that Velo Valero had raised $19,976 for diabetes research, “one of our team members jumped up at the presentation and added the last $24 to make it $20,000,” Rubio said.

Gary Jeffcoats and Dan Rubio Jr. of the Benicia refinery join Alan Dedman (right) of the Wilmington Refinery at this spring's American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure ride in California. Velo Valero has branched out to several Valero locations.
That kind of spirit is what helped get Velo Valero off the ground in the first place in 2000. “It was started by a core group of people who really enjoyed riding,” said Peter Ray, a Senior I/S Manager at Corporate Headquarters who will succeed Team Captain Laura Vaccaro next year. “John Holt (an I/S Specialist) and I were both pushing 40, and we kind of dared each other to do it.”
Valero CEO Bill Klesse plans to ride in the MS 150 and is currently among the top fundraisers. He has stiff competition; Tom Kuckelman of AT&T, who was last year’s top fundraiser, is riding again. Kuckelman has already met a challenge from Tony Ralf, development director of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Lone Star Chapter, who said he’d dye his hair bright red if someone raised $20,000.
Ralf sported his new hairdo at Valero headquarters on Sept. 13, trying to drum up more money in exchange for a chance to dye his eyebrows teal. Two $10,000 donations from Klesse and Valero Chairman Bill Greehey ensured that the eyebrows would be dyed too.

Tony Ralf, development director of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's Lone Star chapter, dyed his eyebrows Valero-teal after company executives Bill Greehey and Bill Klesse met his fundraising challenge.
The MS 150 has become Velo Valero’s big event, and also its main recruiting tool. People who volunteered to support the riders often became riders themselves in subsequent years. The growing mass of Velo Valero riders at each MS 150 has also led employees and their friends and family members to join up – and has even spurred other corporations to form their own teams. “I’ve been with the company for 20 years, and some of my proudest moments have been at the starting line and seeing that sea of teal jerseys,” Ray said. “People see that and they want to be a part of it.”

Good evening Velo Valerians -
Several people have been e-mailing and calling with questions about apparel orders. Thought I would take a moment to respond and hopefully clarify where we are at and what you need to do to pick up your orders in time for the ride.
AUGUST ORDERS ARE IN
For those who placed orders in August, the shipment has arrived. Out of town team members' orders were shipped yesterday via UPS to the address you listed in the PayPal system. You should be getting them any day now. If you don't get you order by Friday, please call Stan Lear at (210) 345-4228 to find the tracking # for your order.
We are kindly requesting that San Antonio team members please pick up apparel orders. We are not shipping any SA based orders. We ask that you please give Patricia Jones a call at (210) 345-4064 and make arrangements to pick up your orders here at Valero Headquarters. We will be glad to leave your order at the front desk with security, and you can pick them up any time. We just need to know what day you are planning to come. This is also a good time to pick up Velo team packets.

For those who placed orders in the final round, we called VO Max today and they should be arriving by Friday. They will be ready for pick up early next week. Again, we ask that you call Patricia to make arrangements for pick up. Let's Get Ready to Rumble!
The clock continues to tick - there is only 1 training weekend left until the Bike to the Beach! As we mentioned last week, you need to be doing longer rides, and practicing drafting and paceline techniques. In addition, you need to be doing "back to backs" - i.e., doing medium to long rides on both Saturday and Sunday.
Finally, you should be thinking about your ride strategies for the big weekend:
-
Are you going to ride in the first wave of riders that will start at 7:30 each day? This is for more aggressive riders who want to maintain a "brisk cycling speed". Or are you going to wait for the "recreational start"?
-
Are you going to do 50 miles the first day? Or the whole enchilada (90+)?
-
Who are you going to partner with while riding? Since you can almost always count on a strong headwind the second day, it's very important to ride in group and take turns pulling to spread the workload.
Remember: the goal of your training program is to prepare you to safely ride whatever distance you choose to do (up to 157.14 miles) at a pace that is comfortable for you.
We have two organized rides scheduled to assist in your training program. As always, bring plenty of fluids and foodstuffs, and bring some cash for the C-stores along the way.
Click here to access our full 2006 training schedule, including the maps.
John Tenison will lead riders on various routes on the East side of San Antonio. Routes will vary in distance from 50 to a 100 miles. The terrain is very similiar to what we'll see on the MS 150 Bike to the Beach, so it's our traditional tune-up for the ride. We'll be starting at Judson High School. NOTE: No SAG support will be provided this week, since the truck will be heading to Corpus to support the Conquer the Coast ride. Wheels up at 08:00 am!
Carl Crawford will once again lead a medium distance Sunday ride for folks who want to get a back to back in. The route will basically be the route followed by the Tour de Gruene; the starting point is the parking lot in Gruene. Wheels up at 09:00 am. (Note the later starting time!)
As noted last week, safety Offier Chuck Divelbiss has prepared a guide to safe cycling you'll want to review as soon as possible. Many of the tips apply to our training rides in addition to the big organized rides like the MS 150. Click here to access. There is also a great safety guide at the official Bike to the Beach Site.
See ya' on the road!

The clock is ticking - there are only 2 training weekends left until the BTTB! It's time to really be focused - you need to be doing longer rides, and practicing drafting and paceline techniques. In addition, you need to be doing "back to backs" - i.e., doing medium to long rides on both Saturday and Sunday.
We have two organized rides scheduled to assist in your training program. It should be a great weekend to get up early and ride, and then head out to the Valero Texas Open for some PGA golf action in the afternoon.

John Tenison will lead riders on the legendary Luckenbach ride on Saturday. This will be our last chance to work out on real hills before the MS 150. The full route is 65 miles, but there will also be 35 and 45 mile options. We'll be starting from the Fiserv Bldg in downtown Boerne. Wheels up at 08:00 am!

Hello Velo Valerians -
Hope your day is going well. We are getting close to the big day. I thought I would take an opportunity to check in on a few details of the upcoming Valero MS 150.
TRAINING
As we approach the last few weeks of training before the ride, it is important that you get as much "seat time" as possible. Over the next 3 weekends, be sure to have at least one day where you do a long ride. Try to increase the mileage on this day by 10 additional miles per week until you work up to 70, 80 or 90 miles. Also, this is the time to start your back to back training rides. Try to do 2 consecutive days of riding per week between now and October 7th to get yourself and your 'seat' used to the feel of riding 2 days in a row. In between your long rides and back to back training, shoot for short rides of 15-20 miles and work on speed and pedaling techniques. Mix up the flat roads and hill training when choosing training routes. Although this is not a "hilly" ride, in completing the hill training now, you will actually be bett er prepared for the distance and wind resistance you will be facing on Oct 7-8th.
NEW!! Staggered RIDE STARTS
There are a few new ride options this year geared toward the recreational rider. For starters, the ride start will be staggered this year for the first time by rider speed. As the title sponsor for the event, we will be the 'first in line' team for both of the following starts:
7:30 am Start for Experienced Riders - 17 mph average speed +
8:15 am - Recreational START - For those who want to ride at a more leisurely pace
RECREATIONAL RIDE OPTION - DAY 1
For those who have not been able to train as much as you would have liked or get nauseous at the thought of even attempting 100 miles in the heat, we have good news. There will be shuttle buses this year stationed at the Falls City lunch stop. This is the 50 mile point and is a perfect distance for the new or recreational rider. The shuttles will take you directly to Beeville once you are through.
VELO VALERO PACKET PICK UP
Don't forget about the packet pick up scheduled for NEXT MONDAY, SEPT 18th from 5 - 8 pm at the Valero cafeteria. Don't forget your SIGNED MS 150 Waiver forms.
You can download the form here:
http://biketothebeach.ms150.org/btb/forms/06_waiver_form.pdf
You MUST pick up a packet in order to ride as the packet contains your rider number and stickers to label your bike.
Additionally, there will be a VALERO Rider Packet for all Velo Valero team members. It will contain your Velo Valero Wristband which allows you to have your meals under the Valero tent. It has a Team T-shirt which we ask you to wear on Saturday evening. We have also ordered socks that match our team jerseys. Each team member will receive 1 pair. These packets will be distributed on Sept 18th and on Friday evening October 6th at the Rider Expo at the Crown Plaza Hotel.
SPAGHETTI DINNER - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6th
In keeping with Velo Valero tradition, we are resurrecting the Friday night Spaghetti dinner. But this year, we will hold the dinner at the Crown Plaza hotel ball room. Dinner will be $10 per person. We will have a room set up where you can bring your plate - meet and greet fellow team members and enjoy a slide show of years past as well as meet the Velo Valero Board Members. More details will be forthcoming as we get closer.
BIKE INSPECTIONS
The MS Society recommends that all bikes are inspected PRIOR to the ride by a trained bicycle technician. There are several bike shops around town that have been named official MS150 service stations. Click on this link for a list of shops: Official Bike Stores and Inspection Stations
The inspection is free, but does not cover the cost of any repair or tune up.
Assuming your bike passes the inspection, the technician will place an event sticker on your bike. This sticker will guarantee you waived Labor Fees should you need repair or other work on your bike during the event weekend. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of this service.
We want you all to be safe out there and bicycle maintenance is every bit as important to your safety as your good judgment on the road, protective gear, and following road rules.
TEAM JERSEYS
For those who placed your orders in August, the team jerseys/shorts are due to arrive next week. We will send an announcement as soon as they arrive to let you know about pick ups. For those who requested shipment, we will gladly ship out of town jerseys, but would appreciate San Antonio locals to pick up their apparel from our headquarters. Times, dates, etc. will be forthcoming.
For those who just ordered this last round, jerseys will arrive Oct 2nd. We will have pick up at Valero.
What are the expectations for wearing your jerseys during the ride??We request that all Velo Valero team members wear their new jerseys on Day 1. On Day 2, you can wear your old teal colored Valero jerseys or we ask that you wear the new ones again. If you only have one new jersey, no worries, you can give your jerseys a quick rinse on Saturday afternoon and they will be good to go for Sunday. They dry pretty fast outside or you can use washer/dryers at the hotels or college.
TEAM TENT
As always, Velo Valero will have a giant team tent in Beeville. We will be in the same spot this year. About midway on the LEFT side (If you are facing the stage). We will be serving some light snacks in the afternoon when you arrive in Beeville and then will have Chef Fausto's special barbeque dinner as well as pasta from Carraba's at 5 pm. Breakfast will be at 5:30 am on Sunday. Get there early to ensure you have plenty to eat.
All team members are welcome to bring one guest/family member to join you under the tent, but we need to know how many you are planning to bring. Please drop me a quick e-mail to let me know your plans.
SHUTTLES FROM CORPUS to SA
As a member of Velo Valero, you have access to a free shuttle from Corpus Christi back to SA. We have room for 45 people. This is a free service. Simply click here to reserve a space:
https://secure.valero.com/apps/corp/NSurvey/survey.aspx?surveyid=8
We have about 20 more slots open. The shuttles typically leave as they fill up. So as soon as 15 people finish the ride and are ready to go home, the shuttle will take you back to SA. The bikes however, typically do not arrive back in SA until around 5 pm. They will be shuttled back to the AT and T center in a large moving truck once all riders are in.
MASSAGE THERAPY
Upon finishing the ride, we will have 15 massage therapists ready and waiting to give you 25 minute massages. The cost is $20. If you want to reserve your spot now, click here:
https://secure.valero.com/apps/corp/NSurvey/survey.aspx?surveyid=8
Otherwise, you can just sign up when you get to the team tent. The services will run from 12 noon to 8 pm.
LODGING
If you are still contemplating where you are going to sleep, you only really have 2 options at this point, Camping or the Gym floor in Beeville. There are plenty of spaces for camping outside. Just bring your tents and sleeping bags and ALARM clocks. Once you arrive in Beeville, you find a spot and squat. If you opt for the gym, I recommend ear plugs to drown out the snoring!!
For those who reserved hotel rooms in advance, you should be all set. Congratulations, the early bird does get the worm when it comes to hotel space for this ride.
TEAM ROSTER
If you have not already done so, please take a quick minute to check to ensure your name is on the OFFICAL MS Team Roster for Velo Valero.
http://www.velovalero.com/forums/thread/627.aspx
We have had alot of people who either forgot to complete that blank on the MS registration form or at the time of registration, did not indicate they were riding with a team. It takes just a minute to get this resolved. If you don't see your name on the link, just send me a quick e-mail.
I think this about covers all of the details swimming in my head for now. Please let me know what questions you have and how we can help. We anticipate a great weekend ahead on Oct 7-8th and sure are glad you will be with us! Thanks for being a part of our team.
Take care,
Laura

Here's your daily dose of Velo Valero news!
Weekend Training Rides
There are only 4 training weekends left until the BTTB, so you need to be training and training hard if you plan on doing the entire ride. We have two rides scheduled this weekend to assist in your training program. Click here to access our full 2006 training schedule, including the maps.
John Tenison will lead various routes from Bullis County Park on Saturday. Wheels up at 08:00 am.
Carl Crawford will lead a 50 mile ride from the Valero Retail Distribution Center on Sunday at 07:30 am.
As always, make sure you eat a big meal the night before and get plenty of rest. Even though the days are getting cooler, our rides are getting longer and you need more total energy to get your miles in.
Additional Jersey Orders
We are taking additional orders for team jerseys between now and 8 am on Monday, 09/11. Our preference remains for all riders to wear the 2006 jersey during the MS 150 - we want to look sharp for the TV cameras!. Jerseys ordered this week will be delivered and distributed the week prior to the MS 150. To order a jersey, click here. Jerseys ordered previously will be distributed at the packet pick-up on 09/18 (see details below), and at other upcoming team events.
Bake Sale
Stan Lear is coordinating our annual Bake Sale from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm on Monday, 09/11, at Valero HQ. There's still time to donate baked goods for the sale - contact Stan if you are interested. If you are a Valero Employee, you can receive volunteer hour credit for the time you spend baking items. All proceeds from the sale go towards our team fundraising totals.
Packet Pick-up on Monday, 09/18
As in previous years, the MS Society has scheduled a special packet pick-up for riders at Valero HQ. This year it will be from 05:00 pm to 08:00 pm on Monday, 09/18. At the pick-up, we'll also be distributing team jerseys, and selling the team t-shirts for your friends and relatives who want to proudly wear our team colors. NOTE: If you want to pre-order a t-shirt, click here.
Current Team Size and Fundraising Totals
The team continues to grow, and more importantly, our fundraising total continues to rise. As of this morning, 238 riders have registered to ride with Velo Valero, and we've raised a total of $27,851. Please review the current MS 150 Team Roster to make sure your name is on it, and your fundraising totals are being accurately reflected; click here to see the roster. We are updating this this roster daily with information from the MS Society. If any of the information on here is incorrect, please send an e-mail to cycling@valero.com and we'll work with the MS Society to correct it. If you aren't on the list, it is because you did not register with Team Velo Valero; this is easily corrected. In terms of fundraising strategies, click here to access a great document prepared by the MS Society on effective fundraising.
Tetanus (Td) boosters are needed for adults every ten years. The vaccine prevents tetanus (lockjaw) disease and also contains prevention from Diphtheria. Cuts, wounds or burns are portals of entry for the tetanus and diphtheria bacteria. Tetanus causes serious, painful spasms of the all the muscles. It can lead to locking of the jaw so that the affected person cannot open their mouth or swallow. Diphtheria causes a thick coating in the nose, throat and airway. It can lead to breathing problems, heart failure , paralysis or death. Those who have not be immunized within the past ten years are in need of the vaccine.
The rule of thumb is: If you can't remember when your last vaccine was and you don't have documentation or shot records available, you probably need it now. If you get another vaccine within ten years, it is not harmful.
Valero employees can get vaccinated at the HBD Wellness Center, ext 4755. Call for an appointment
That's all the news (for now!).
See ya' on the road!
